After selling out shows across the UK and Europe in 2023, the 50th anniversary concert series of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells is heading to Australia.
Celebrating one of the greatest albums of all time, the series of shows are arranged by Mike Oldfield’s long-term collaborator, Robin A Smith, who also leads the orchestral concerts.
Smith has collaborated with Oldfield for over 25 years, working with the British musician on Tubular Bells 2 and Tubular Bells 3 and performing with him live on many occasions, including at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.
Performing at 15 theatres across Australia, fans can expect to hear Tubular Bells in full along with other compositions from Oldfield’s stacked back catalogue, including ‘Moonlight Shadow’, ‘To France’ and ‘Man in the Rain’.
The first show takes place in Sydney at the State Theatre on Saturday, August 3 before the tour crisscrosses its way around Australia. The final show takes place in Perth at the Astor Theatre on Saturday, August 24.
“The show premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2021 to great acclaim,” Smith said in a statement. “The wonderful thing about Tubular Bells is the way it evokes such melodic beauty and drama. It’s as fresh today as it was when Mike created it in 1971. I love having the chance to bring it to new audiences as well as those who, like me, are still captivated by it whenever they hear it.”
Released by 19-year-old Mike Oldfield in 1973, Tubular Bells became a global hit after the opening theme was used in the movie The Exorcist. Written and recorded by Oldfield, the mostly instrumental album was critically praised across the board, winning the 1974 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.
50 years on and Tubular Bells remains a touchstone in music history. It’s the highest-selling instrumental album of all time and is certified platinum 9x in the UK.
The chance to witness this classic album being performed live is an incredible opportunity for any music lover and one we can’t wait to experience.
Tickets are on sale this Wednesday, April 24 via David Roy Williams Entertainment.
