Crazy Town Vocalist Shifty Shellshock Passes Away

Shifty Shellshock, lead vocalist of nu-metal act Crazy Town died at age 49 early this week.

Born Seth Binzer, Shellshock died at his Los Angeles home on Monday according to County Medical Examiner. While no official cause of death has been given, Shellshock’s rep, Howie Hubberman, told Rolling Stone he believes it may have been an accidental overdose.

“Seth has been struggling with substance abuse problems for quite sometime,” Hubberman told Rolling Stone. “Seth was not happy with the daily struggle that’s called life. Some people cope in many different ways. It’s unfortunate we lose so many people to addiction and accessibility to harmful drugs. Shifty was a real-life tragedy. Too fast, too hard, too soon.”

Forming in 1995, Crazy Town released their debut album, The Gift of the Game, in 1999. It wasn’t until the release of the album’s third single ‘Butterfly’ the following year that the band gained traction, with the song becoming a global hit, eventually topping the Billboard Hot 100.

Sadly the band never managed to capture that success with subsequent releases. Fighting between band members and Shellshock’s well-documented battles with addiction caused Crazy Town to experience several breakups and reunions over the past 25 years.

Posthumous SOPHIE Album Announced

The first and final posthumous release from late Scottish electronic music purveyor SOPHIE has been announced. The self-titled album will be released via Transgressive and Future Classic on September 27.

SOPHIE, who tragically died at the age of 34 after a fall in Athens, Greece, in January 2021, had only released one album previously, the critically acclaimed Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides.

The posthumous album was near completion at the time of SOPHIE’s passing, with longtime friend and producer Benny Long stepping in to finish the project with blessings from SOPHIE’s family.

“This album has always told the story of Sophie’s musical journey, a cacophony of skill and creative vision eclipsing time and genre,” reads a statement about the album. “Her unique sound world moves at an emotional level, encouraging the listener to intuitively embrace the ever-evolving landscape of light and dark, soft and hard, to the end of self-love and joyful self-acceptance. Emphasising contradictions of sound and material, Sophie’s work supersedes the pure aural to create the dimension she dreamed of.”

SOPHIE is set for release on September 27 via Transgressive and Future Classic. You can listen to the album’s first single ‘Reason Why’ below.
