August 30 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

Words by Tobias Handke

Macëy – ‘Union St’

MACËY are one of those bands that struggle to fit a label. They take inspiration from a wide range of genres and artists, with ‘Union St’ the perfect example of their cosmopolitan sound.

A siren-esque beat builds towards buoyant percussion and subdued vocals on a track that takes you on a soaring walk through Adealide’s late-night underbelly. ‘Union St’ is a dance floor filler with touches of industrial metal, dance-punk and euphoric electronic flourishes that’s hard to define but a joy to listen too.

DEM MOB – ‘I’ll Get By’

DEM MOB’s meteoric rise continues with the release of ‘I’ll Get By’. Recorded in their home studio, the tune has a more polished feel than previous releases, mixing the group’s gritty and honest lyrical content with an R&B-influenced chorus.

The track addresses the challenges each member went through when relocating to Adelaide from the APY Lands in northern SA but is framed with a positive outlook and tied together by the uplifting hook, “Only I can save me.”

Mixed by Luke Million and mastered by Andre Eremin, ‘I’ll Get By’ is another notch in the ever-impressive song belt of DEM MOB.

Jupiter Saloon – ‘Let Me Know’

‘Let Me Know’ is the wonderful debut release from newcomers Jupiter Saloon. Comprising singer Eloise Addams and guitarist Nick Pipe, the duo cite Fleetwood Mac as an inspiration, and it’s clear to see on ‘Let Me Know’.

A soothing indie-pop number with a strong 60s vibe, the song is about falling for someone who treats you badly, with Eloise having this to say about ‘Let Me Know’: “The lyrics reflect the helplessness of being infatuated with someone who disrespects and manipulates you… someone you continue to hold onto, despite knowing the dead-end situation you’re in.”

It’s a fab little tune recorded at Island Studios with additional instrumentation from Conor Deery (drums), Matteo Grilli (bass) and Jaime Willson (keys).

‘Let Me Know’ is the kinda tune you really need to hear live to appreciate its nuances, which you can do next month when Jupiter Saloon peform at The Exeter on Friday, September 27.

Storm the Crown – ‘Ritual’

The majority of tracks we feature as part of our Noteworthy New Releases section lean towards the rock, indie, electronic and pop side of the music sphere, but every now and again something catches our attention from left field. This week it’s Storm the Crown’s head-splitting ‘Ritual’.

The five-piece deliver devastating riffs on ‘Ritual’, a track with enough double kick pedal action to give you a concussion. Loud, powerful and slightly scary, ‘Ritual’ is another dynamite tune from Storm the Crown.

Bonnie & The Walnuts – ‘Your Love’

Bonnie & The Walnuts is best known for indie-rock, but the solo project just dropped some unpolished punk tracks that show he’s not confined to one genre. Our favourite is ‘Your Love’, a track that’s rough around the edges but worth spilling your beer for in a mosh.
