September 13 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

Words by Tobias Handke

Gallery One – ‘French 75’

Taken from Gallery One’s just released God, I Hope Chiverly Is Not Dead EP (it’s really good, go give it a listen), ‘French 75’ is an experimental freakout in the best way possible.

It reminds me of an art show I attended in downtown New York a couple of years back featuring abstract paintings soundtracked by weird psychedelic jazz blasting from the venue’s sound system. It was an oddly cathartic experience that stuck with me, much like this tune.

Merging free jazz with frantic riffs and David Byrne-esque vocal delivery, ‘French 75’ is a pleasing head trip that makes me want to knock back a few cold ones with the band at Harry’s New York Bar, the watering hole mentioned in the song.

Lucas Day - ‘Wallow’

How good is Lucas Day? So good!

The rising singer-songwriter continues to deliver on his potential with this soul-infused ditty featuring an absolute cracker of a guitar solo.

In a statement about the tune, Day describes ‘Wallow’ as “a riffy rock song that explores human connection and its ability to pull us out of our deepest depths, safely to dry land.”

If you dig what you’re hearing be sure to catch Day tonight at Space Theatre as part of this year’s Adelaide Guitar Festival and read our Muso on Muso chat between Day and fellow crooner Dustyn, aka Dusty Lee Stephensen.

Loopole – ‘Room 19’

There’s a shoegaze vibe to Loopole’s ‘Room 19’ that resonates with my melancholy Friday feels.

Taken from the EP of the same name, ‘Room 19’ lurks through the dark alleys of the UK post-punk scene, with the song’s gentle percussion and rhythmic guitar strumming coming together in a swirl of soothing instrumentation and calming vocals.

This is moody music with soul, with Loopole’s brand of experimental alt-rock a thrilling experience to behold.

Dom Sensitive – ‘Flowers’

Dom Sensitive has released a lot of music over the journey, often under different guises, but the prolific artist is now ready to unleash his debut LP, Leather Trim.

‘Flowers’, the first track Dom recorded for the album, is an experimental delight pulling from a wide range of influences. A musing on nature and mortality, Dom delivers hypnotic talk-sing vocals over spacey synths and programmed beats.

A psychedelic journey through Dom’s inquisitive mind, ‘Flower's’ ends with an ear-piercing whistle that will have you scratching your head but leave a smile on your dial.

Duck Lake – ‘DAydreams’

Listening to ‘Daydreams’ by Duck Lake is what floating down a river on a lilypad must feel like.

The sophomore release for the dream-pop outfit, the swirling, sun-dappled track radiates endless calm. Chelsea Parsons’ airy vocals float around soft layers of instrumentation, creating a hazy sound that’s deserving of having on repeat when you need a break from the world.

What a treat!
