October 4 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

Words by Tobias Handke

Dustyn – ‘Right Where You ARe’

Dustyn is the new project from the Wanderers frontman Dusty Lee Stephensen. A phenomenal guitar player with a voice that’s hard to resist, his first single under the moniker marks a new musical direction for the Adelaide favourite.

‘Right Where You Are’ is about as far away from the blues-tinged rock of the Wanderers as you can get. A soulful and sparse creation, the tune features Dustyn’s dulcet tones, rich string arrangements and a soothing guitar solo oozing soul.

Inspired by the moment Dorothy arrives in munchkin land in The Wizard of Oz, there’s an authenticity to ‘Right Where You Are’ – the song swirls and soars with lush instrumentation and conjures feelings of nostalgia and better times.

Taken from Dustyn’s upcoming Midnight Movements EP, 'Right Where You Are' showcases an introspective and emotional vulnerability from an artist whose star is about to shine even brighter.

Dojo Rise — ‘The Best Part’

Add a little reggae to your life with ‘The Best Part’ from Dojo Rise. The Aldinga trio just dropped their latest EP The Best Part, a magical five-track journey through reggae, rock, funk and soul with a little blues and roots thrown in for good measure.

The EP’s title track is a sunny Sunday jam perfect for a day at the beach knocking back a few cold ones while catching some rays. This groovy number combines a striking bass line with hypnotic beats and features a horn section from special guests SUB-TRIBE.

JesseMelancholy – ‘blisters’

We’re longtime JesseMelancholy fans here at The Note and are super impressed with the genre chameleon's debut EP, does the skin i wear define me?.

Like most releases from JesseMelancholy, the five-track EP is hard to define. It covers multiple genres and takes you on an emotional journey through wasted youth, heartbreak and finding your true self.

Of all the tracks on the EP, ‘blisters’ is a personal favourite. Over an acoustic guitar, the bedroom creative croons softly about trying “to find joy in the smaller thing” until the song explodes in a torrent of noise and screaming vocals before fading into eerie silence.

You can stream does the skin i wear define me? here.

TOWNS — ‘Tantrum’

Punk rock duo TOWNS are celebrating the announcement of their debut album sentimental slowdown with new single, ‘TANTRUM’.

The latest from longtime friends Aston Valladares and Dan Steinert is a scuzzy three minutes of dynamite riffs and distorted vocals made for sending moshpits into a frenzy.

The good news is you can hear TOWNS perform ‘TANTRUM’ live when they hit Crown & Anchor on Friday, November 22. Tickets are on sale here.

sentimental slowdown arrives November 15 via Farmer & The Owl/BMG. You can pre-order/pre-save here.

Liquid Mercury — ‘Juliet’

We finish this week’s Noteworthy New Releases with a boppy slice of guitar rock courtesy of Liquid Mercury.

‘Juliet’ is the first single from the duo of Owen Gaythwaite (vocals/guitar) and Alex Rule (drum). It’s feel-good Aussie indie rock reminiscent of Beddy Rays, Teenage Dads and the like.

You can’t help but smile listening to ‘Juliet’, so if you’re feeling down, whack this one on your stereo and you’ll instantly find yourself in a better mood.
