July 26 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite tunes of the week.

Words by Tobias Handke

Alt. – ‘Conversations That Hurt’

After the 2023 release of their debut album, ABEYANCE, Alt. returns with their first new single of the year, the powerful guitar rocker ‘Conversations That Hurt’.

Co-written with Trophy Eyes vocalist John Floreani, the track dissects the pain of breaking up, with frontman Daniel Cullen-Richards pleading, “I want you to show me something to believe in / Just give me a reason to let you in.”

There’s almost a stadium rock vibe to ‘Conversations That Hurt’, with Alt. once again demonstrating why they are one of the country’s great young rock acts.

Bad’m D – ‘Picture Disc’

It’s clear Bad’m D are fans of UK garage and house when listening to ‘Picture Disc’. The latest single from their upcoming album, Fukg U, this is a groovy old school club tune with a crisp beat that really goes.

You can imagine a DJ dropping ‘Picture Disc’ at an underground UK warehouse rave and the kids losing their nuts while garage MCs fight over the mic to see who gets to spit their best rhymes over the tune’s head-nodding melody.

This is one is for the old heads.

LOLA – ‘Fast Life’

If you like Bad Religion then you’ll love LOLA’s ‘Fast Life’. As the title eludes, this is frantic punk rock that never lets up for a breather. It’s two and a half minutes of noise pollution that’s absolute bliss.

‘Fast Life’ is the type of song made for getting down and dirty in the mosh, and if you’ve ever seen these lads play live, you’ll know how hectic things can get.

JessieMelancholy – ‘wings’

We’ve written about several JesseMelancholy tunes and the Adelaide creative never fails to disappoint. I’m always interested to hear what he’s come up with when his songs appear in my inbox, and ‘wings’ is no different.

The final teaser from his forthcoming debut EP, does the skin i wear define me?, ‘wings’ is a vibrant hyper-pop tune that begins with JesseMelancholy delivering talk-sing vocals over a piano line about struggling to support your friends when you can’t even look after yourself.

The beat flips halfway through and ‘wings’ becomes a dynamic electro number featuring JessMelancholy’s manipulated vocals and a pulsating dance beat.

It might not be for everyone, but JessMelancholy continues to push the boundaries of what pop music is, with ‘wings’ another fascinating release.
