June 7 - Noteworthy New Releases
Our favourite tunes of the week.
Elsy Wameyo - ‘Umva’
To coincide with the announcement of her highly anticipated debut album, Saint Sinner, Nairobi-born, Adelaide-based artist Elsy Wameyo has excited fans with the release of her latest single, ‘Umva’.
Wameyo’s fresh flow matches the pulsating hip hop beat, with the rapper, singer and producer mixing braggadocios rhymes with honest expressions about who she is.
Talking about the tune, Wameyo said: “It came from a place where I was writing and I didn’t exactly know where it was leading. I had to say certain things and this was one of those verses, where it was my body – whether I liked it or not – saying, ‘We have to get this out, because it’s the only way we’re going to heal. ‘Umva’ means ‘listen’.”
Saint Sinner is out Friday, July 26 via AWAL/Impressed Recordings. You can pre-save/pre-order the album here.
Loopole – ‘In Reverse’
Welcome back Loopole! Their first single for 2024, ‘In Reverse’ is a masterful blend of classic rock and contemporary influences.
It’s a moodier take on the outfit’s signature indie-rock sound – a hazy and hypnotic noise that’ll send gig-goers into a trance.
The new track is the final puzzle piece in Loopole’s forthcoming EP – stay tuned for its release date.
JesseMelancholy – ‘we can change the world if we try’
Fans of low-key indie electronic arrangements with soul will be all over JesseMelancholy’s latest tune.
Produced by Perth’s kvn, ‘we can change the world if we try’ is the first track from JesseMelancholy’s forthcoming debut EP, set for release later this year.
This is an indie-emo ballad that begins with JesseMelancholy’s soft voice crooning over an acoustic guitar. Auto-tune vocals then merge with electro beats as the second half of the ‘we can change the world if we try’ evolves into an emotive bedroom banger. Top stuff.
Agapanther – ‘Spun Out’
‘Spun Out’ is the latest guitar cruncher from local rockers Agapanther.
This is good old fashioned rock with a punk influence from the rising quartet comprising vocalist and guitarist Kyle Kenworthy, lead guitarist Coen Miller, bassist Dylan Kenworthy and drummer Harry Mason.
‘Spung Out’ is solid stuff that will rattle your brain and shows Agapanther’s maturity as a band. It’s one of their most impressive songs yet. Exciting things to come.
Beyonce's Fiancés – ‘La Sing’
Anyone who’s had the pleasure of visiting Adelaide karaoke institute La Sing will relate to this hilarious pop tune of the same name from Beyonce’s Fiancés.
It’s the first taste of new music from the band since returning to Adelaide from Melbourne, with longstanding member guitarist/bassist Palky now joined by vocalist Dave Gregan and keyboardist/drummer Max Tulysewski.
As for ‘La Sing’, it’s three minutes and 40 seconds of 80’s electro-pop about the misadventures that go on at La Sing, with references to Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born To Run’, the venue’s famously sticky floors and the “bogans in the back drinking their red tins.”
