Our favourite tunes of the week.

Nathan Hui-Yi - ‘ASAKUSA RIOT’

Asian-Australian rapper and producer Nathan Hui-Yi’s ‘Asakusa Riot’ is an experimental laser bolt of boom-bap influences and futuristic beats.

Much like his previous output, ‘Asakusa Riot’ features unconventional samples and Hui-Yi’s stream of conscious raps that find him dropping rhymes about landing kickflips and falling in love.

Special mention must also be made of the single’s instrumental b-side, ‘WOO-Z’, a beat even A$AP Rocky would be proud to rap over.

aleksiah – ‘Who Are You When You’re Not Performing?’

One of the most exciting talents to emerge from Adelaide’s music scene, singer-songwriter aleksiah is preparing for the release of her much anticipated debut album, Who Are You When You’re Not Performing?

Ahead of its May 31 release, the indie pop starlet has released the album’s vulnerable title track, and boy is it something special.

aleksiah’s heavenly voice is utterly mesmerising, with the rising star singing over sparse production that builds to a swelling tornado of guitars and percussion before ending suddenly, leaving you holding your breath in awe. Magic.

Nocturnal Animals – ‘Ashlee's Berceuse’

The self-proclaimed ‘skeleton boys’ kick off their Australian tour this weekend at the Cranker, and to celebrate, Nocturnal Animals have shared new single ‘Ashlee's Berceuse’.

While often labelled alt-rock, there’s a bit more going on with ‘Ashlee’s Berceuse’. Sure, it’s got the band’s familiar guitar grind but it’s less emo and more post-rock. The use of the double kick pedal is unusual but breathes new life into the middle section of ‘Ashlee’s Berceuse’.

Colourblind – ‘Midnight’

Alt-rockers Colourblind has been building a solid fanbase across the country off the back of some stellar tunes over the past 12 months. Their latest single, ‘Midnight’, is one for fans of grungy guitar rock with an edge. It highlights a heavier, darker vibe from the quartet that is more than welcome.

This tune is a hefty assault of guitars, bass and percussion that tries to engulf vocalist Finn Cameron’s raspy scream. “I’ve gotta work it out / I’ve gotta find a way” he pleads against a wall of noise that hits hard and offers a glimpse of what fans can expect form Colourblind’s forthcoming self-title debut, set for release June 28.
