August 2024: Five Places To Know
New faces in SA’s food scene to know.
Thelma
Task Olivia Moore (LOC), Tom Campbell (Summertown Aristologist) and James Spreadbury (Noma) with opening a new venue and they’ll deliver you a cosy eatery driven by community. Thelma is the new venture breathing life into the former Brid coffee shop in Piccadilly, and while it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what this eatery does, flavour, friendship and fun are on high rotation. European-influenced country-style cooking using locally-led produce that’s driven by the seasons underpins the food served here. You’ll also find some freshly baked pastries and coffee.
Yes Please: Farmer's Brekkie with jammy eggs, pickled veg, salami, cheese and fresh sourdough.
Where: 176 Piccadilly Road, Piccadilly

Belles Hot Chicken
Fitzroy’s cult chook shop has crossed the border to open a diner on Hindley Street. Belles Hot Chicken was born from chef Morgan McGlone’s time tasting (and cooking) traditional tucker in Nashville, Tennessee. Fried chicken couldn’t be more authentic than here. Choose from big wings or tenders rolled in the spice of your choice, hot chicken and waffles drizzled in syrup or a stacked 16-piece bucket. Wash this feed down with Belles boozy slushies or the house draught inside the neon-lit, leather booth bar.
Yes Please: Hot chicken and waffles covered in syrup, obviously.

Lunar Landing
One for those with a sweet tooth. Lunar Landing touched down in Brompton this winter, opening next door to its sibling venue Seven Grounds. Out-of-this-world desserts are what’s on the menu at this cosy casual spot. Southeast Asian flavours intertwine with classic recipes to push the boundaries on traditional treats (think pandan or matcha-flavoured basque cheesecakes). Each dessert is Instagram worthy, too!
Yes Please: The signature ‘Full Moon’ gateaux with guava mousse, hawthorn berry
and almond sponge.
Where: 2/28A Hawker Street, Brompton

Olevita
The latest venue from the crew behind Bar Lune, Oliveti opened along the foreshore this winter with rave reviews. The part- pasta-bar-part-steakhouse draws influence from all corners of Italy (it’s even named after the tiny Abruzzo town Villa Olivetti) while nodding towards the fresh flavours found along the Mediterranean. Think chargrilled octopus with walnut tarator, gnocco fritto with mortadella and gigli pasta with ricotta salata, peas and chilli. This is all served inside Oliveti’s Euro-influenced interior, featuring a terracotta colour palette, fresh subway tiles, warm lighting and splashes of foliage.
Yes Please: Blue swimmer crab on hashbrowns with bottarga.

Sofia
Say hello to Sofia, the sophisticated sibling of favourite city diner Part Time Lover. Serving refined flavours from dawn to dusk, the Hutt Street hotspot taps into what true hospitality is all about: flavour-driven food, free-flowing booze and the feeling of community. This ethos is communicated through Sofia’s Mediterranean-leaning menu that’s designed to share. Opt for the ‘Don’t Even Think About It’ offering and let the in-the-know staff guide your evening. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with the housemade haloumi, wagyu ragú two-sheet lasagne and half-shell scallops.
Yes Please: Greek lamb shoulder with roasted peppers and feta.
Where: 16 Hutt Street, Adelaide
