Soup Season: Our Four Favourite Spots for a Broth

Slurp ‘em, spoon ‘em, savour ‘em.

Laska House

A cult favourite for good reason. Laksa House began serving big bowls of spicy noodle soup in the Market Plaza Food Court in 1997, later opening additional storefronts on Hutt Street and Flinders Street. Obviously, its namesake is undeniably the biggest drawcard, although you can treat yourself to sambal fried rice and Singapore noodles, too. Expect generous servings of laksa that don’t skimp on flavour at an accessible price point. Our go-to is the vegetarian dumpling soup with Hokkien noodles, tofu and pak choy.

Black Dog Gallery

An unassuming suburban spot that punches way above its weight. Black Dog Gallery is the passion project of Japan-via-Adelaide chef Jun Abe, who named the small hole-in-the-wall venue after his beloved dog, Kuro. You’ll find boutique cups of coffee and contemporary Japanese cuisine here. But its ramen is why it has garnered a dedicated customer base. Create your own bowl or opt for the classic Black Dog concoctions. We love the Kara Miso ramen with wilted spinach and chilli paste.

East End Cellars has re-started its Soup Kitchen this August in support of Hutt St Centre and Catherine House. Every Thursday from midday, one of SA’s leading chefs will whip up their favourite soup.

The star-studded lineup includes Duncan Welgemoed (Africola), Sharon Romeo (Fino Vino) and Josh Cooke (Chianti). Each bowl (which comes with crusty warm bread) is $20 and 100 percent of the profits are donated to each charity.

Address: 25 Vardon Avenue, Adelaide

Luchia’s Pizza & Spaghetti Bar

Lucia’s Pizza & Spaghetti Bar has been a staple in South Australia since it opened in 1957, introducing the city to the authentic flavours of Southern Italy. Generous serves of lasagne, fresh paninis and deep pan pizzas are the go-to here, but winter gives guests a reason to order a big bowl of homemade minestrone soup. Expect borlotti beans, brown rice and pasta floating about in the hearty vegetable broth. Top with parmesan, pepper and fresh chilli. An extra $3 will get you some fresh ciabatta for dipping, too.
